Do you know how to do stone work? I have a book called the art of the stonemason, but It would be great to see these sort of videos on building with feildstone, and dressed fieldstone, dry or mortar, etc. just in case you run out of ideas mate. Check out Trow and Holden for hammers and chisels.

I moved to Romania from the UK. We bought a house in my wife's home village for literally 6000 euro. Spent 10k fixing it up (only two and a half rooms -50sqm-ish). Want to build an extension but cavity walls aren't something done over here so trying to figure out how to do it myself.

My brick wall in the garden has expansion joint in the 135 degree corner but I can see that foam and sealant is only from outside. On the garden side there is mortar. Is that correct?

Well done! I haven’t used this method in over 30 years! Have some shallow arches to build on job I’m doing now so thanks for the refresh. Will also send the base off to the joiner to make the arch so two jobs in one!

Good review. I’ve done various small jobs and I’m generally pretty crap at brickwork. As you mention there’s no substitute for skill and understanding. I found knowing how to mix up muck consistently for the conditions is central to successful outcomes. Drier or recon bricks, hot days needs much wetter mortar which in turn tends to lead to narrower mortar joints once laid. Similarly damp bricks, cool damp day and the much needs to be stiffer else when you build up the corners they won’t stay true& firm and properly in place. Also critical the type of bricks and blocks used. This product is really about laying a consistent tidy mortar bed and cutting waste for beginners when all the other issues are properly addressed

Greetings from Texas- USA. I really enjoy your work and the extra time it takes to show everyone how much work it is to build anything today. I have a few questions. Why in the land of wet weather do you not install a chimney cover or pot cover ? I’ve heard the term perps. What is that about. You asked about vermiculite. It’s an insulation and doesn’t sag. We have it here but yours looks like a pearl lite and Portland cement. The video on how to make an arched fireplace was amazing. Keep up the great job. Best Wishes Black Velvet Chimney in Texas.

The video is a few years old. But, crack on mate with your clattering. I appreciate the chatter. You are quite incessant but I appreciate how you voice your thoughts. As you talk it through you show newbies how they should think it through. I also like that you don’t edit out your mistakes but crack on with adjustments to your work as you mitigate your mistakes.
